Only Show of the Fall...
As promised, we will be playing a show November 27th at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago, IL w/ Native, Castevet, and Cloud Mouth. It will likely be our only show of the fall, so please do your best to make it out and support all of the bands. It should be a lot of fun, so be sure to tell all of your friends and save the date!

Coming out of Chicago are this self-styled “party-math” trio who recently (_cough_back in may_cough_) released their debut EP on the Big Scary Monsters label. This is some fun and funky stuff: precise and intricate, but with more definite pop stylings and melodies than your average noodly guitar workout. It’s entirely possible that they’re a little too clever in terms of their knowing and...

The long wait is over. The originators of the “party-math” genre finally release their long awaited (by this writer) EP. It is good. And you pay what you want, which makes it awesomer. The 5 tracks that comprise Party Mathematics clock in at a massive 15 and a half minutes in total, and feature a small amount of not terrible vocals alongside some outstanding musicianship the likes of...

When I started going to punk shows in Chicago last year, I knew it was only a matter of time until some enterprising label swooped in and began exposing the vast amounts of talent pouring out of the basements. So far, UK label Big Scary Monsters has stepped up, snapping up the UK rights to Native, and putting out records in the US for former Lion Of The North pop-punkers Grown Ups. Frenzied...

Out of all of my new musical finds this year, none have captivated me as much as Noumenon. The Chicago area math rockers just released their Big Scary Monsters debut Party Mathematics earlier this month and really there is no more fitting a name for the zany, technical bliss that is Noumenon. The flippantly titled “Algoresrhythm” is an off-kilter bundle of ever shifting melodies that’s tied...

Noumenon call their brand of sweet, spastic noise “party-math,” and that’s about as good a description as I can think of. Like a tougher, harder Japandroids, these Chicago guys cram as much music as possible into three-minute chunks, shooting electric lightning in every direction and bombarding your ears with furious drum fills. They’re crazy, and great. There’s not much going on lyrically (some...

If ever a release was aptly titled it’s noumenon’s Party Mathematics. While we may be currently drowning in a sea of identikit math-rock outfits in 2010, the Chicago three-piece stand out commendably from the pack thanks to their joyous, highly danceable offerings. Although the large majority of Party Mathematics is purely instrumental, the group vocals of opening salvo ‘Baby,...

Party Mathematics: an oxymoron, surely? Improbably, these Chicago math-rockers deftly side-step the genre’s chin-stroking image and deliver just that, injecting their twisting, sinewy compositions with humour, rock n’ roll energy and a joie de vivre rarely heard in beardy circles.
Opener ‘Baby, Baby Teeth’ comes charging out of the speakers, its huge-sounding guitars briefly joined by raucous...

This, the latest from the ever brilliant Big Scary Monsters label, is a joy to behold.Noumenon make noise. Danceable noise. It’s the sound of Foals and Lightning Bolt being fed into a blender. There’s pop hooks, epic riffs and shredding guitars.
The band, over on their bandcamp site, are offering you the chance to pay WHATEVER YOU WANT for the EP. If payment was directly proportional to...

For the sake of being objective:
Noumenon have set themselves the challenge of combining the intellectual stimulation of math-core with its absolute polar: partying. However, ‘Party Mathematics’ delivers an assault so great to the ears through its persistent distortion throughout every relentless second that any sort of party atmosphere is completely lost. This is where my main...

Noumenon: Party Mathematics EP (Big Scary Monsters)
Release date: 04 May 2010
Noumenon came to my attention after taking part in split releases withRooftops and Talons - two bands which I wholly adore.
From these splits, my attention was pricked in Noumenon’s direction, and today it spiked. Why I hear you say? Well, their new digital-only Party Mathematics EP - a transatlantic release...
